When I speak with people that are interested in real estate whether it’s to invest or to get licensed in the industry, I realize that they don’t understand the realities of what real estate is about.
Many folks will look at real estate and just think it’s totally transactional and that everything is fairly easy. I have over 20yrs of real estate investment experience and I’ve come to find that it is indeed simple but it is also not easy. There is a lot to making a living and working in the real estate business.
I want to share the realities of the real estate business to help give people a better understanding and more importantly a perspective of what living, working and investing in real estate really is.
Here are 3 basic facts of real estate that I want to share:
1. Real estate is 100% ENTREPRENEURSHIP
When you get into real estate, many people are building their business from scratch. Whether you are an investor or a realtor, when you start you have to build everything. I have yet to find anyone that got into the real estate business and got paid on the first day. Real estate is a business and a game of delayed gratification that takes a lot of investment of time, energy, effort, money, and training up front.
What I love about real estate is that it is the purest form of business. If you do nothing, you get paid nothing. The counter to that is that real estate is unlimited and you can also create as much as you want.
The reality in this is that most people do not understand the amount of work that goes into building a real estate business or a career and that’s why so many people fail.
2. Real estate is 100% MARKETING
Just as you are instantly an entrepreneur you also have to become a full-time marketer as well. If you don’t tell anyone what you do, no one will know how you can help them. Real estate is open to everyone yet not meant for everyone.
Just because you got a real estate license or decided to become a real estate investor doesn’t mean anyone will be coming to you to do business.
The foundation of Real Estate is marketing. Everyone needs to know what you do so you can help them with their real estate needs. Make sure that you’re always marketing yourself and your business.
3. Real estate is 100% about RELATIONSHIP
I’ve heard it say that real estate is a business built on relationships over transactions. Real estate is a relationship building business. If you do not like working with people, real estate is not for you.
Everyone must remember that relationships are built upon value, commitments and love. It is about helping you move forward in your life and being as helpful as you can with any tools and resources connections in the real estate space.
